Project Overview

We undertook the rehabilitation and technical upgrading of two dams located in Dilla, which had become ineffective due to prolonged sedimentation, embankment weakening, and insufficient drainage infrastructure. The project was initiated to restore water capacity and enhance the overall resilience of the dam structures.

Our intervention involved extensive desilting, precision shaping of embankments, and construction of upgraded spillways using reinforced concrete elements. We also compacted the dam surfaces and added erosion protection measures. Stabilization of the outer banks and embankments was achieved using both physical and vegetative methods, customized to local environmental conditions. To reinforce the embankments, we installed gabion baskets to enhance structural strength. Additionally, several essential support facilities were constructed, including a slow sand filter treatment system, an elevated water storage tank, an animal trough, a water kiosk, a watchman’s shelter, a toilet facility, and a generator room. Fencing was also installed around the dams to ensure site safety and security.

These works were executed by our core project team, including two civil and water Engineers, a project Manager, and surveyor, and more than 18 support and technical staff. All operations were carried out using KEEPS owned machinery, ensuring consistent project control and quality adherence.

Equipment Deployed:

Outcome & Delivery

The rehabilitation process returned the dams to full functional status and upgraded them for long-term sustainability. The spillways are now capable of safely managing peak water flows, and water storage has been significantly increased.

The project’s impact extends to hundreds of households and thousands of livestock that depend on these dams, reinforcing water security in the wider Dilla area. Our ability to restore and modernize deteriorated infrastructure underscores KEEPS role in leading climate-adaptive construction efforts in Somaliland.
