Project Overview

In a drought-affected region with limited surface water infrastructure, we constructed a high-capacity Haffir dam in Caynaba to provide a sustainable water reservoir for pastoral and rural communities. The project began with topographic and hydrological assessments to identify the optimal site and design parameters.

Construction involved precision excavation and embankment building using heavy machinery, guided by leveling and RTK survey equipment. The dam core was formed with compacted soil layers reinforced with stabilizers to prevent seepage and erosion. To further enhance water retention, geomembrane lining was installed within the reservoir basin.

Our team, consisting of two civil engineers, two surveyors, and 30 skilled and general workers, maintained a rigorous equipment schedule to ensure efficiency and accuracy in earthworks and compaction tasks, despite the challenging terrain and large dam footprint.

Complementary infrastructure was also constructed, including auxiliary structures, reinforced spillways, silt traps, fencing for site security, solar-powered water pumps, and water distribution systems. These features collectively improve the dam’s functionality, durability, and service to the community.

Outcome & Delivery

The Haffir dam was completed to design specifications, providing a critical water buffer for the Caynaba region. It now functions as a reliable seasonal water source for thousands of livestock and households, reducing dependence on groundwater and tanker-supplied emergency water.

This project enhanced local climate resilience and demonstrated our capacity to execute large-volume dam works in drought-prone zones with complex logistics. It reinforced our position as a strategic infrastructure partner in Somaliland’s water security agenda.
